Los Alcazares - Fiesta del Caldero
Held during the second week of October, with the main fiesta day being the 12th October, which is also a national holiday, Hispanic Day.
For Los Alcazares the fiesta signifies the gaining of municipal independence when it was segregated from the municipalities of San Javier and Torre Pacheco, on 13th October 1983. Hence, Los Alcazares has a week-long celebration of the town's municipal autonomy, during which there are firework displays, processions and most notable, the 'Caldero' Festival, where the local fishermen light fires on the beach and cook their catch in hanging cauldrons (12th October). Typical dishes of the Mar Menor, whose recipes are mainly based on rice and fish, are cooked on the beaches throughout the day and the public is encouraged to join in the celebrations and gastronomy presented by this historically important fishing town.
