Our summer series of competition for the Julian Hook Trophy resulted in some close racing right up to the final week.
Stuart Lockwood, having established an early lead on week one, held off the opposition to emerge the Overall Winner. The race for second place could not have been closer however, with Graham Jones and Ray Hermitage level on points. Graham was awarded the second place after individual race placings were taken into account with Ray in third.
The final week's racing was made particularly interesting as we shared the water with Dragon boats, kayaks and sailing dinghies in addition to the occasional fishing boat. As if that wasn't enough, a film crew from Murcia Region Tourist Office were there recording publicity material. Still, as they say, there's no such thing as bad publicity and, in spite of the distractions, we safely completed our races. At the end of it all we retired to Lorenzos in Pilar de la Horadada for our end of season Menu del Dia.
A question which many people ask on seeing a radio controlled yacht for the first time is "What makes it go?" The answer, as with any sailing craft, is the wind. The radio controlled model yacht helmsman has control of the rudder for steering using a standard model aircraft type servo and of the sail position using a small winch.
The sails are set to allow the boat to sail to windward, with minimal input from the controls and are then released when sailing off the wind by operating the winch. The one thing that model and full size sailing boats have in common however, is that the wind strength and wave height is the same for both. The main difference between the two is that while the 'full size' helmsman is on board and can feel the actual wind out there on the water, the model yacht skipper must judge the conditions remotely from the jetty and act accordingly.
As with previous years, the RC Sailing Group did not meet during July or August and will re-convene in the first week of September at our regular location, Sailworld, Lo Pagan. As always you can find information about the Group on our website www.rcsailingmarmenor.com
