At the beginning of April the RC Sailing Group Mar Menor were invited to take part in Murcia Regions annual Fiesta del Deporte, a showcase for all kinds of sporting and leisure activities held at the Parque de Fofo in the City.
Five of our members represented the Group and organised a series of informal races to showcase our hobby. The location provided conditions completely different from those which we normally experience at Lo Pagan. The city centre lake is relatively shallow, concrete lined and shelves very gradually on all sides. Not only is it surrounded by trees and bushes, but by high rise buildings too. All of this made the racing 'interesting' to say the least. Just when a skipper thought he had the measure of the constant wind shifts he could find himself aground having strayed too close to the edge of the pond. All in all though it was a good experience in difficult conditions and a great opportunity to 'fly the flag' for the Group.
Meanwhile, at our regular Wednesday meetings, it wasn't just the temperature that was hotting up as skippers competed in our Spring Series of races. At the time of writing we have only one more week of racing left before the final result is determined.
In March the Group was represented at the International IOM meeting in Torrevieja and in Alicante at the Trofeo Club Nautico competition. At the Internationals our best placed helm, Stuart, came in at 28th out of a fleet of 34; no mean achievement when sailing against the best Spanish skippers and some top names from the rest of Europe. There was a smaller fleet of 12 in Alicante, but some top competitors among them included the current Spanish National Champion. Our sole representative, Terry, finished the two days of racing in 10th place. Well done!
Over the weekend of April 29th – May 1st we have members entering the Campeonato de España in Almeria, so another opportunity to take on the big boys!
Also in May on Wednesdays we will begin regular weekly sailing for our Summer Cup competition. This will take place at our normal location at Lo Pagan and will continue until the end of June when we take a break during the height of the summer.
