Five successive wins in April and early May guaranteed a place in the end of season Play-Offs for Mazarrón FC. After beating Cartagena FC UCAM 2-0 away from home in the final game of the regular season,
Mazarrón finished in fourth place and, at the time of writing, are due to face UD Los Garres in the two-legged Play-Off Semi-Final with the advantage of playing at home in the second leg.
It is a remarkable achievement for a Mazarrón team which was only registered with the Murcia Football Federation literally hours before the deadline at the start of the season. A new team was formed under new President, Ruben Manuel Martinez Collado, with a new administration and virtually a new squad of players except for long-serving captain Juan Andreo and a few young players promoted from the junior team.
After four games Mazarrón were bottom of the league with just one draw and three defeats, but the squad has grown in confidence and ability and they are now hoping to regain their position in the Tercera Division of the Spanish League which they lost back in 2010 along with near-neighbours Bala Azul who have already achieved automatic promotion as runners-up to champions SFC Minerva.
After losing to local rivals CD Bala Azul at the end of March and drawing the next two games against Alcantarilla FC and CF Molina, Mazarrón had dropped out of the play-off positions, four points behind sixth placed CF Molina with just five games remaining. However, the four successive wins coupled with poor results from two of the other contenders meant that the 3-0 home win against CD Plus Ultra on 7th May was enough to secure a play-off place.
Mazarrón had lost only one game out of the last nineteen games since losing at home to Jumilla CD on 4th December. Mazarrón's games against Los Garres took place on the weekends of 20th/21st May and 27th/28th May. If successful, it is expected that the two-legged final will take place on the weekends of 3rd/4th June and 10th/11th June.
The play-off games are over two legs - if both teams win one game each the team with the best aggregate score goes through. If aggregate scores are level at the end of both games the team which has scored most goals away wins. If, after taking away goals into consideration, the scores are still level extra time of 15 minutes each way is played.
Mazarrón is one of the few teams in the region who have support at every away game with Los Amigos de Mazarrón FC supplying a coach for supporters (€8 for members and €10 for non-members). Full details of all games with dates and kick off times are advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on Facebook fb.me/mazarron2016 and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarrón.
The April Los Amigos Luncheon Club visit was to Restaurante El Hermanos Mandola in Aledo. The meal was excellent and was washed down with plenty of wine and beer. The May lunch was at the Bar/Restaurante HalaOla in La Azohia on Tuesday 23rd. We will have a report in next month's edition.
A party of Los Amigos members and friends enjoyed an excellent trip to the Costa del Sol, staying 3 nights at the Hotel Las Rampas in Fuengirola. The hotel was perfectly situated just yards from the bus station, the train station and the beach and close to many bars and restaurants. Included in the weekend was a coach trip to Puerto Banus and the picturesque village of Mijas up in the mountains.
For the away game at Jumilla on 7th May the Los Amigos coach left earlier than usual to allow the supporters to enjoy a meal on the outskirts of Jumilla before the game. It was a very successful outing although some members admitted to being the worse for wear after too much wine with their meal!! The afternoon ended with a much needed 2-1 win for Mazarrón which was the perfect end to an excellent day.
The End of Season Player of the Year Function and Presentation Evening was held at The Club House, Camposol C on Tuesday 16th May. After a BBQ supper the annual presentations went to the Players' Player of the Year, won by Marcos and the Los Amigos de Mazarrón FC Player of the Year Award won by Captain Juan Andreo. The evening was rounded off with dancing to the fabulous sounds of the Geckos.
