Our August competition was held at La Torre Golf Resort with 23 members taking part. The unusually low turnout did not deter us from having a really good game of golf using the format of a singles Stableford competition.
One of our members seemed to feel at home in the bunkers, some of which are very large, so much so, we thought he was conducting his own desert campaign! He eventually emerged from behind a cloud of sand with a wry smile of contentment and a comment similar to, "No score".
Fortune favours the brave and shortly after his desert campaign, the same member put his drive on the green of a par three and subsequently won 'Nearest the Pin'.
The story of the day has got to be about Arthur Anthoney. He fluffed his drive on Hole 1, recovered to a good position with his second shot, eventually sinking his putt for a par. From that moment on he never wavered. Par followed par with a couple of birdies thrown in for good measure. Now Arthur is not exactly the tallest chap in the Society, but on this occasion, we all looked up to him, especially as he finished with what is believed to be a Society record of 42 points for a Division Three player.
It was a day to remember as he also won a Nearest the Pin trophy.
